Crowns, bridges, veneers and fillings

Crowns are made for heavily filled teeth, or for cosmetic reasons. Bridges/ bridgework may be required if teeth are missing. Cosmetic veneers can be made to improve the look of front teeth.

What are crowns? A crown is an artificial restoration which is placed over teeth that have been damaged or have been destroyed by decay. It is like a crash helmet around a head! Crowns strengthen teeth and help to restore them back to their natural shape. They are made of porcelain, or porcelain fused to precious metal [very strong] or gold [very strong]. Some special types of porcelain crowns are also very strong. You can choose what type of crown you would like and your dentist will discuss the options with you.

As well as improving your appearance bridgework will also spread the strain of your eating on the surrounding teeth. Bridges can also help readjust a patient’s bite or help to restore natural appearance after an accident.

You would need 2 visits for crowns, bridges or veneers – for the preparation and then the fit. Your dentist will always show you everything before it is finally fitted to make sure you are 100% happy.

Fillings are used to fix a cavity in your tooth caused by decay. You will be offered a choice of materials by your dentist and advised which one will be best for you – this may vary depending on where the filling is required. Obviously you can choose what type of material you would prefer. White fillings have become popular because of cosmetic appearance. Many people prefer to have natural looking teeth which do not show signs of treatment.

All costs and treatment will be gone though with you BY YOUR DENTIST [not a receptionist] before any further steps are taken.
